Retro Samsunspor Shirt – History and Cult Shirts of the Black Sea Club

The history of Samsunspor dates back to 1965, when several local clubs from the port city of Samsun merged to form a powerful club. The Reds soon established themselves in the upper Turkish leagues and enjoyed their first golden era in the late 1970s and 1980s. The club reached the cup final several times and qualified for European competitions, which was remarkable for an Anatolian club outside the Istanbul trio. But the club’s history is inseparable from the greatest tragedy in Turkish football: on 30 January 1989, the team bus crashed on the way back from an away match in Malatya. Three players lost their lives, and others were seriously injured. This event burned itself deep into the club’s soul and is still commemorated with honor every year at the stadium. Despite this blow of fate, the club repeatedly showed remarkable resilience. Years of ups and downs between the Süper Lig and TFF 1. Lig followed, with emotional promotions and painful relegations. The derbies against Black Sea rivals Trabzonspor and Çaykur Rizespor are especially intense – matches that electrify the whole region and turn the stands into a sea of red flags. After a long dry spell, Samsunspor returned to the Süper Lig in 2023, where the club challenged the established giants with surprisingly strong performances and even competed for international places for a time. In the golden 1980s, players such as Tanju Çolak, the future Turkish top scorer and Galatasaray star, shaped their early careers with the Reds. Çolak became a phenomenon in Samsun before moving to Istanbul and conquering Europe. Necati Özçağlayan and Fatih Tekke also wore the shirt with pride and wrote chapters in the club’s history. The tragedy of 1989 claimed irreplaceable figures in Zoran Tomić, Hasan Vezir, and coach Nuri Asan – their names are immortalized in the collective memory and honored in every stadium announcement. In more modern times, foreign players such as Carlos Wellington have given the club fresh momentum. During the most recent promotion back to the Süper Lig, players such as Soner Aydoğdu, Zeki Yavru, and the goal-threatening striker Marius Mouandilmadji stood out. On the bench, figures such as Reha Erginer, Hasan Doğan, and more recently Markus Gisdol and Thomas Reis, as well as successful coach Hüseyin Eroğlu, have left defining marks. Eroğlu in particular is celebrated as the architect of the Süper Lig comeback and, with his tactical discipline, embodies the modern Samsunspor spirit – combative, organized, and with Black Sea pride in his heart.

The Samsunspor shirt is a tribute to the city colors of red and white and is among the most iconic designs in Turkish football. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the shirts were often simple, made from thick cotton fabric with a V-neck and the classic club crest on the chest – classics that collectors hunt especially hard for today. The 1990s then brought more colorful designs with sponsors such as Aytemiz and bold geometric patterns that perfectly captured the spirit of the era. In the 2000s, suppliers such as Adidas, Lotto, Puma, and Umbro alternated, producing distinctive shirts with modern cuts. The retro Samsunspor shirt from the 1993/94 season, when the club played in Europe again, is considered a special collector’s item among connoisseurs. The red home shirts dominate with white accents on the collar and sleeves, while away shirts were white or occasionally black.
