No player exists in a vacuum, and Litmanen's career was shaped by some of the sharpest minds and brightest talents of his era. At Ajax, manager Louis van Gaal built an entire tactical system to maximise his gifts, surrounding him with Edwin van der Sar in goal, the De Boer twins in defence, and Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf and Marc Overmars in midfield. In attack he linked up telepathically with Patrick Kluivert and Finidi George – the goal Kluivert scored in the 1995 final came from a typically unselfish Litmanen pass earlier in the move. At Barcelona he found himself in a dressing room of giants such as Rivaldo, Luis Figo and Patrick Kluivert again, but tactical clashes between Van Gaal and the board limited his impact. At Liverpool, Gérard Houllier deployed him sparingly behind Owen and Heskey, and he developed a strong friendship with fellow Scandinavian Sami Hyypiä. On the international stage, his long partnership with Mixu Paatelainen, Jonatan Johansson and later Sami Hyypiä gave Finland a competitive spine, and rivalries with the great Scandinavian sides – Sweden, Denmark and Norway – defined many of his most memorable nights in red and white.
